Japan’s QUIRKIEST Girl Bands

Unstuck in time with decades of Alternative Female Japanese Bands

Kon’nichiwa MotherFos!

This is a personal nostalgia video — similar to the Dead Milkmen one posted a couple of weeks ago — where I go through all the times in my life I have delved into Japanese alternative music and for some reason they usually are a female band. I use the word “quirky” to describe them because there is such a variety in the sounds from pop, to punk, to retro, etc. If I really wanted to make a click bait video I would retool this into something like “Top Ten QUIRKIEST Japanese Girl Groups.” But as usual I’m going for something a bit deeper and more artistic than that, where I am splicing together live footage, interview clips and my own personal experiences with the group.

The format of the video is from the Dr. Manhattan meme and most inspired by the “darker grittier Batman,” meme that blew up after the last Batman movie came out. When I started seeing Otoboke Beaver show up in my feed I thought, “Oh wow, here is the latest Japanese girl band I always end up seeing,” and started imagining all these events happening at once.

I use the term “unstuck in time,” which is not from Watchmen but from Kurt Vonnegut’s book Slaughterhouse-Five where he tells the events of the book out of order by using a science fiction narrative trick. I figure Alan Moore must have borrowed the idea for Dr. Manhattan and this is really the catchiest way to describe the idea.

Enjoy the video.
